The Course
Math 110 is a technical math course geared for Automotive students, Culinary Arts students and Landscape Horticulture students. The state legislature requires this or a similar course for anyone earning a certificate or degree in any technical field. These fields require the use of many concepts of arithmetic. A small amount of algebra is also useful, but not required. This course provides review of arithmetical skills and topics as well as some basic practice in applied problems related to each program.

Class Format
Your course is a highly interactive course in which you will spend much of your time in front of a computer with a pencil and paper. You are to listen and read (or just read or just listen) to the explanations, try examples, and do homework on the computer at a pace which is comfortable for you and within the suggested pace. Do not procrastinate as you want to complete the course material on time. Since this is an online class, there will be no face-to-face meetings with your instructor or classmates.

Material Covered
The Course Outline indicates the topics to be covered. Feel free to work ahead of the schedule whenever the topics are easier for you to understand. Spend more time with the topics most difficult for you. However, do NOT fall behind the suggested schedule by very much or you may have difficulty completing the course material before the end of the quarter.

Calculators
You should use your own calculator. You will need to use a calculator during your training while at SSCC. It is best that you become comfortable with your own calculator. Buy a calculator that will do fractions. The TI30X-IIs does fractions and has a space on the screen to show both what was entered into the calculator and the results of the computation.

Special Needs
If, due to a disability, you need course adaptations or accommodations, or special arrangements or have any other concerns, contact your instructor. For special arrangements or course adjustments, you must meet with Roxanne Tillman. Roxanne Tillman is responsible for helping students requiring special services and accommodations. You may contact her at 763-5137 or go to her office at RSB-12.

Attendance
Since your class does not meet as a group, attendance refers to your time spent accessing the CD's and the Online Gradebook. The class goals are not concerned with length of time as long as the time is well spent. The concern is your understanding of, and progression through, the course material. You are graded on your ability to do well on the graded pen-and-paper worksheets & forms and the two tests covering the concepts you study.

Your instructor will be available online to tutor and to help you with the homework, worksheets. You may also drop into the MAST (Math And Science Tutoring) in RSB-12 during the evening and Saturday hours. Otherwise, the MAST is available to you during the day.

Homework
After you have completed each section or topic in the Hawkes Learning Systems material, you should do the odd-numbered problems in each required section in your textbook unless you are comfortable with the topic. Do all the problems if you feel you need more practice. The homework is not collected or graded. Learning mathematics is like learning to play the piano or baseball or to cook; it takes practice! So, PRACTICE!

Only the worksheets are collected and graded. Your instructor will tell you how you are to turn in your worksheets (by mail, by email or by dropping them off somewhere on campus). The worksheets consist of application problems. Read the Homework Directions as it tells you the expected format for the Worksheets. You must follow the correct format to receive credit for your correct work on the Worksheets.
NOTE: Your completed Worksheets will not be returned to you. Your instructor will email regarding any major errors should you make any. Of course, the instructor will let you know your scores on each worksheet.

Tests
There will be two one-hour tests. The tests are not done online. Make-up tests are not given. Your instructor will contact you regarding the procedure for taking the tests. One method that has been used is that students take the two tests at a place on campus at times the instructor indicates in an email. Other methods are available if you are unable to get to the campus during their open hours (which include evening and Saturday hours). Contact your instructor if you have a conflict.
Each problem will be graded based upon the work you provide. That is, partial credit will be given. A calculator is allowed. You must show your work to get partial credit.
NOTE: Tests will not be returned to you. Your instructor will email regarding any major errors should you make any on the tests. Of course, the instructor will let you know your scores.

Grades
Your grade will be based upon your work on the Academic Systems quizzes, online worksheets, and in-class tests as follows:

The option to take a grade of NC (No Credit) is open to you only if both of the following conditions are met:
1. You have been working on the online materials regularly.
2. You email/send a written request to your instructor before the last week of the quarter.

FAST-TRACK Math 110
Yes, there are alternatives for those of you who have strong math backgrounds and are taking this class just to satisfy the math requirement for Culinary Arts.

  1. You may challenge the course. However, you still have to pay for the course to take the test. If you fail, you will still have to take the course.
  2. OR: You may take a different, higher level math class that will challenge and interest you rather than this course which may be very easy and somewhat boring for you. The online and evening math courses may not conflict with your program.
  3. OR: If you prefer taking this class, then you may finish the class as quickly as you can. Here is what you must do: You must take all the pretests and earn at least 90% or better on them to be able to skip topics or sections. That is, you do not need to work through the topics/sections as long as you show you already have the competency level of 90% or better. You must do all the Worksheets and take the two tests. In other words, do what everyone has to do, but feel free to zip through the material as fast as you can. Do NOT wait until the end of the quarter to do the course material as you will run out of time.

WHAT DO YOU DO NOW?

  1. Register for this class.
  2. Purchase your course packet from campus bookstore.
  3. Follow the instruction sheet in the course packet to install the CD on your computer.
  4. Email your instructor, walsup@sccd.ctc.edu with your contact information.
  5. Now, for each of the required topics and sections (see the Course Outline), follow the process below. Repeat any topic or page, if necessary, for your understanding.
    1. Work through the Instruct and Practice portions of the topic/section.
    2. Do the Certify portion. This is the graded quiz. If you earn less than 80%, redo step (a) and the Personal Academic Notebook (PAN) homework. Then, try the Certify portion again.
    3. Be sure to follow the Course Outline. Do the Worksheets and Forms after each section or topic as shown on the Course Outline.
  6. Contact your instructor if you have any questions or problems!

Any of the above contract/syllabus is subject to change. You will be given fair, written notice should a change take place.
