Math 110
Technical Math
Welcome Letter

Hello and Welcome to your math class!

This class is an online math class; that is, the text and math topics are provided to you through the internet and the class never meets as a formal group. However, you may have to come on campus to take the two tests. This is a self study course with deadlines for assignments. If you don't manage your time well you will find you will not be able to complete this course. You will be using a tutorial mathematics program, Hawkes Learning Systems: Basic Mathematics.

The Textbook

Hawkes Learning Systems: Basic Mathematics is available to you at our campus bookstore or through the mail. This course packet consists a textbook, CD's, and a valid student license for you to access Hawkes' Online Gradebook.

NOTE: If you do not have an email address, go to the Library Commons (in the center of the first floor of the library where all the computers are) and ask the technician to help you set up an email address. You will only be able to communicate with your instructor through email.

After you purchase your course packet, please install the CD on your computer and follow the instruction that comes with your CD's. The website is http://mathonline.southseattle.edu/math110/math110.html.
Fill out the Students Information Form and submit it to your instructor. Start this class right away!! Do not avoid or delay your math work as this usually results in running out of time which means you won’t pass the course. You would have to take this course again, starting over from the beginning.

Now, what am I suppose to do again?

  1. Go to the class website at http://mathonline.southseattle.edu/math110/math110.html and submit a completed Student Information Form.
  2. Purchase your course packet from campus bookstore and install the CD on your computer.
  3. Go to the class website and read the Syllabus, the Class Schedule, and the other helpful information provided. Look for information such as worksheet requirements, what to study, sources of help and many items of interest. (You may want to print out a copy of one or more of these pages to keep handy for reference or just add the website to your Favorites list for quick access.)
  4. Wait for your instructor’s email introducing himself/herself, acknowledging receipt of your Student Information Form, and letting you know you can access the online materials. Be sure to check your email several times per week throughout the term and don't let your email inbox fill up. It is your responsibility to check your email for class information.
  5. Any questions? Email your instructor.
Remember, if you need help using a computer, you may go to the Library Commons and ask the technician on duty. The job of the technician is to help students use the computer. Don’t hesitate to ask for help!

Frequently asked questions:
  1. Can I skip this class?
No. This class is required for your certificate or degree by the state legislature! You can finish the material quickly if you are already very comfortable with arithmetic.
  2. Is attendance taken?
No. Since this is an online class, you work at a computer where the Interactive Mathematics software is installed. You are only graded on your two tests, your quizzes and your worksheets.
  3. Can I test out or challenge the course?
Yes. You may pay for the class and take a single exam. Your grade on that test will determine your GPA. If you fail the exam, you get no refund and must take the class again.
